Vine House - November

28/11/2025 01/12/2025

Take the chance to get away from the crowds for a relaxing weekend with good company and good food.
Available from 2pm Friday to 12 noon Monday.

This gem in Mahurangi Harbour is a 2 km paddle from Sullivans Bay, which is the Auckland Council park at the end of the Mahurangi West Road, first on the right past Puhoi.

The house sleeps 8 (including 2 couples) and has all creature comforts.

Bring sleeping bag, pillow case and food. A shared meal and nibbles is the norm for Saturday night, so bring your goodies.
Lagoon Bay is very tidal, so bringing a kayak trolley is a good idea. The range of paddling is endless, e.g. Waiwera, Warkworth, Kawau Island, Motuora Island – your choice. Or just rest and read and enjoy this tranquil and special place. We recommend you take a carry bag to get all your gear up the track to the house. Secure parking is at Sullivans Bay. Leave a note on your dashboard reading “Vine House Volunteer” when you park in front of the ranger’s house.

Call Trevor on 817-7357, or Matt (Treasurer aucklandcanoeclub.org.nz/contact-us), to book a bed and for detailed information.

6:00 pm: Summer beach sessions (summer substitute for kayak pool sessions)

01/12/2025

Please note that pool sessions have ended for 3 months during summer.
From 1 December 2025 to 23 February 2026 we will be meeting at Murrays Bay beach at 6pm.
There are toilets & cold showers available outside the Murrays Bay Sailing Club. Our volunteer instructors will be available to assist with any training that people require, whether eskimo rolling or assisted rescues, or any other technique requiring wide open spaces not present in a pool environment.
There are no lifeguards so we will have a shore based spotter at all times, to raise an alarm if anybody appears to be in difficulty.
We ask that people continue to use the RollingPlus WhatsApp group to indicate if they are coming and whether they require instruction. There are no fees for beach sessions.
If the weather forecast or sea state are unsuitable for our activities then a cancellation will be advised on RollingPlus around midday of the day in question.
This is a sheltered East Coast Bays beach with a gently sloping sandy bottom, exposed to Easterly winds & swells. Southerly winds can blow kayakers toward the rocks at the northern end of the bay near the jetty.
Please do not impede access to the boat ramp when unloading kayaks.

Trip reports

Fiordland by Colin Quilter

A small team of paddlers explored Fiordland’s remote coastline, launching from Milford Sound and venturing south along dramatic cliffs and secluded beaches. They camped in sheltered bays, navigated changing weather from calm seas to mist and rain, and experienced the raw beauty of untouched wilderness. The journey ended with a return to Milford Sound, completing an unforgettable expedition in one of New Zealand’s most spectacular regions.

Great Barrier Island

On this trip I was keen to visit Tarahiki Island, which sits in the Firth of Thames east of Pakatoa. This photo of Tarahiki was taken several weeks earlier, (from Rotoroa Island).

About us

Auckland Canoe Club has been part of the kayaking scene in Auckland since 1954. It has a proud history of helping its members have fun on the water and improve their paddling skills. The club’s main focus is sea kayaking in the waters of Tāmaki Makaurau but occasionally trips are also organised further afield.

Our members are active participants in all types of paddling experiences that get them out on the water, including exploration and camping, social meandering, expeditions, rescue training, rock gardening and surfing. The club offers a variety of events, trips and training sessions and is run by volunteers. The club’s home base is its storage shed on the Ōkahu Bay boat ramp on Tāmaki Drive, Auckland. This facility and the club’s hire fleet are available for members.
