Great Barrier Island supplementary notes

Another campground in Tryphena Harbour

John Prince sent me this information about the Puriri Bay campground in the northwest corner of Tryphena Harbour

Tryphena Puriri Bay campground, Schooner Bay Rd, Tel 09 429 0184, 09 426 6845

$10 per adult per night, water & compost toilets, quiet, plenty of room

John says, “I stayed at Puriri Bay Camp in mid Jan 2013 for 3 days (or was it 2?) waiting for the winds to drop before crossing the Colville Channel back to Coromandel. I was the only one there and it was completely sheltered and comfortable. There was no caretaker onsite but I did speak to a homeowner across the road who must have passed on to the owner that I was there. After 2 days the owner turned up and was very friendly, casual and interested in what I was doing. His phone details are correct for Jan 2012. You don’t need to book or ring ahead. Definitely a good spot to stay down that end of the island. It is perhaps 400 metres from the beach, slightly uphill on a road partly sealed and partly gravel, and easy enough to get to with a good trolley.”
